Heute Morgen sind die virtuellen Wahlurnen bei der DOAG geöffnet. Alle Mitglieder wählen die Vertreter der Delegiertenversammlung. Diese neue Gremium wurde durch eine Satzungsänderung im letzten November eingeführt und übernimmt den Großteil der Aufgaben der Mitgliederversammlung. In Zukunft entscheiden und entlasten die Delegierten über den DOAG Vorstand, und nehmen den Finanzbericht ab.

Als Vertreter für korporative Mitglieder mit weniger als 500 Angestellten stelle ich mich ebenfalls zur Wahl und freue mich über jede Stimme aus der Mitgliedschaft. Eine entsprechende email mit einem Link zum “Wahlzettel” wurde in den letzten Tagen verschickt.

Wahrscheinlich ist die Ankündigung etwas kurzfristig, aber am 21. Februar wird es in Hamburg wieder ein Oracle Business Breakfast geben, bei dem Jörg Möllenkamp und Dirk Nitschke über Datenbanken auf ZFS und ZFS Storage Appliance sprechen werden während Teilnehmer auf Kosten von Oracle frühstücken. Das Konzept hat sich schon bei den letzten Veranstaltungen bewährt, und das Thema verspricht sehr interessant zu werden, zumal wir uns erst kürzlich damit beschäftigt hatten. Zur Anmeldung.

A few days have passed and with some distance between now and the annual DOAG conference in Nuremberg, it is time to put down some words and review past week’s events.

Let me start with the conculsion: Best DOAG ever! And that is not because there was a huge cake for the conference’s 25th anniversary but because of the small things that happen between sessions. This year was ripe with networking opportunities and nice little chats both with old friends and new ones.

We set up a solid base for nerd talk and networking with the RAC Attack workshop which was buzzing with activity from 9 in the morning until the last session concluded. A big “thank you” goes out all the volunteers who dedicated some time to help out others in exploring RAC systems on laptops. We drew quite a large crowd, at one point there have been 14 attendees in parallel which exceeded our table capacity so some of them set up laptops in a second row and just kneeled between two other seats. Amazing.

My session on VDI implementations went pretty well. Desktop virtualization is really a niche product compared to database, applications and other infrastructure topics. Many seats were left open but the 20 people who did attend this presentation asked good questions and seemed like they were able to take away some good tips and ideas. Goal reached. In addition it was a great opportunity to exchange ideas with Oracle’s Rolf-Per Thulin and discuss the direction in which the desktop virtualization products are heading. His presentation focused on the improvements made to VDI on Linux and the new features that were added since his last DOAG presentation a year ago.

The RAC Expert panel featured a lot of questions on new and upcoming features in 12c. In addition to moderating this I should also take notes on the answers next year to be able to reproduce some of the insights that were given. Just like last year, the speakers were brilliant and I have to say thank you again to Martin Berger, Robert Bialek, Markus Michalewicz and Sebastian Solbach.

The database community organized a very informal and easy get-together at a local restaurant later on Tuesday night. And while this was as far from a raging party as Nuremberg is from San Francisco, it provided a good way to interact with other DBAs and get to know some of the people who make up the german oracle community. Something I have missed from past conferences that I would describe as rather cold, official and distant when compared with this year. Job well done!

On Wednesday I got to share the things I found out when we integrated flashback archives into our software with an engaged audience. The presentation went fine and I even received some new ideas on things to try. I also attended a session and later an expert panel on Oracle VM. While most of the panel discussion revolved around whining about licensing stuff, both the session and the last question to the panel pointed out that today there is no integrated backup solution for VMs. The official “solution” is to install backup agents into all your guest operating systems and perform regular backups from there. The community workarounds are either to use the cloning feature of OVM and backup the cloned filesystems or to halt the vms for a second and create reflinks on OCFS. And while this works and there are ways to automate and script this, it still does not feel like a proper backup solution. Robbie De Meyer, product manager for OVM, acknowledged that this was on Oracle’s radar but was unable to spark much hope for a change anytime soon.

The conference ended with a nice little party, easy music and an abundance of neat finger food. I really cannot help myself around tiny snacks and I ate enough to make me feel a little sick and not wanting to ever consume food again (only lasted one day) and so it was time to head home again. The plan was to fly home, get to my car, break as many traffic rules as possible and get to a club downtown to see The Hives. Unfortunately, Lufthansa had other plans and decided it was a good idea to keep me in Bavaria for an extra hour so I was only able to catch the last two minutes of the concert…
After that it was time to get a week of “rest” and also get some work done before finishing the 2012 conference season at UKOUG in Birmingham.

After having spent the last sunny days of the year rocking out to the Hives at yuerba buena gardens in San Francisco, the days are getting shorter, darker and colder back here in Germany. As fall is slowly morphing into winter it is time for the annual trip to Nuremberg for the largest Oracle conference in Europe: DOAG. This year will be specially busy trying to share as much knowledge as possible in 3 (and a half) days: Two presentations, one expert panel discussion and three full days of RACattack!

Things will get kicked off the day prior to the conference with an Exa-* hacking session by local Oracle partner and Exadata specialists ISE. Their Exa-Test-Center is conveniently located within the Nuremberg airport so this will literally be the very first stop after touching down.

The RAC Attack workshop will begin tuesday morning and stays open during all three conference days. Martin Berger, Jay Dutov and Markus Jendrossek will help attendees with setting up a working RAC cluster with virtual machines on laptops. If you do not bring an own laptop, you will still be able to get your hands dirty with some of the labs on rental machines and also have the opportunity to engage us in RAC geek-talk.

On tuesday afternoon at 2pm, I am going to talk about Oracle Desktop Virtualisation, tell some interesting customer stories and share implementation best practices. If you are also interested to hear about the newest features of VDI and the progress that Oracle made with VDI on Linux, make sure to also join Rolf-Per Thulin in his presentation on Wednesday morning.

Right after that session on 3pm we are going to have our second annual RAC Expert panel. Attendees get the chance to throw their most burning questions concerning RAC technology at a panel of true Oracle Cluster experts. Questions will be answered by Martin Berger, Robert Bialek, Markus Michalewicz and Sebastian Solbach.

On Wednesday I will present on Total Recall aka Flashback Archives and explain how portrix is using this technology to enable querying freight rate data from the past. Developers can take advantage of this feature with little to no extra effort to add a time dimension to their applications. I will introduce the basic syntax, working principles and share our experiences with it.

And I am certain that whatever time is left between or after sessions will fill quickly with networking opportunities at any of the parties or evening activities.

Aufgrund des Gerichtsurteils, gegen das Oracle eigentlich in Berufung gehen wollte, hat Oracle nun angekündigt, die Entwicklung für die Itanium-Plattform wieder aufzunehmen.

In einem Interview mit dem DOAG Vostandsvorsitzenden Dr. Dietmar Neugebauer erklärt Hermann Bär von Oracle, dass er sich im Vergleich mit anderen Oracle Konferenzen für die DOAG 2012 mehr Chancen für Praxiserfahrungen in Hands-on-labs sowie Fragestunden mit Experten und Produktverantwortlichen wünscht.
Beide Wünsche sollten in diesem Jahr in Erfüllung gehen – jedenfalls beim Thema RAC und Clusterware. Denn neben der Wiederholung des erfolgreichen Epert Panels wird es 2012 auch den RAC Attack Workshop während der gesamten Dauer der Konferenz geben. Beim Expertenpanel am ersten Konferenztag haben Kunden, Partner und Konferenzteilnehmer die Möglichkeit, Fragen zu RAC und Clusterware an eine Reihe von erfahrenen DBAs, Beratern und Oracle Produktmanagern zu stellen.

Wem das noch nicht reicht, kann jederzeit beim RAC-Attack Workshop Experten treffen, Demos ausprobieren und vor Allem einen Datenbankcluster auf dem eigenen Laptop installieren. Der Workshop wird von Freiwilligen betreut. wer Interesse daran hat, hier etwas auszuhelfen, meldet sich bitte bei mir.

Weitere Panels wird es zum Enterprise Manager, Oracle VM, APEX sowie development tools. Die 25. Auflage der DOAG Konferenz verspricht jedenfalls, extrem interessant zu werden.

Total Recall, die Funktionalität zur manipulationsgeschützten Speicherung langfristig aufzubewahrender Daten, war bislang als Option zur Oracle Database Enterprise Edition separat zu lizenzieren.

Ab jetzt ist Total Recall nicht mehr separat als Option zu lizenzieren, denn die Funktionalität von Total Recall ist in die Advanced Compression Option integriert worden.

Wer also Total Recall jetzt nutzen möchte, muss die Advanced Compression Option lizenzieren.

Oracle-Kunden, die bereits Total Recall lizenziert haben, werden von Oracle kontaktiert, um eine (Übergangs-)Lösung zu erarbeiten, so hört man von Oracle.

Die Entscheidung des Europäischen Gerichtshofs ist gefallen:
Gebrauchtsoftware darf unabhängig vom Medium weiter verkauft werden. Der Erschöpfungsgrundsatz greift auch beim Download der Software. Link zur Pressemitteilung des EuGH.

Ich vermute, dass daraufhin der BGH ein entsprechendes Urteil fällt. Mal sehen, wie Oracle reagiert.
